Frequently asked questions
Is Stream Video Downloader really free?
Yes — the extension and website are completely free, with no premium tier, no ads gating the download button, and no feature locked behind payment.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There's no sign-up, no login, and no email required. Install the extension and start using it immediately.
Is there a limit on how many videos I can download?
No. Because detection and conversion run locally in your browser instead of on our servers, there's nothing for us to ration — download as many streams as you like.
What kind of videos does it work with?
Any page serving an HLS (.m3u8) stream or a direct MP4 file — news sites, course platforms, live broadcasts, and more. It does not operate on YouTube. See the full format list on the formats page.
Is my data or video ever uploaded to your servers?
No. Detection happens in the extension, and conversion runs as WebAssembly (FFmpeg) inside your browser tab. Your video never leaves your device.
Does it work on live streams?
Yes. Live HLS broadcasts play with a LIVE badge in the extension popup and open in the built-in player. Live streams can be played, but conversion to a downloadable MP4 file applies to on-demand (VOD) streams, not live broadcasts.
What if a stream is protected by DRM?
Streams protected by real DRM systems (such as Widevine or FairPlay) are not supported. HLS's own lightweight AES-128 segment encryption is a different, much weaker mechanism and is handled automatically where present.
Which browsers are supported?
The extension is built for Chrome (Manifest V3) and works on any Chromium-based browser that supports the Chrome Web Store.
